The Synod of Bishops (an “assembly” of bishops) was instituted by Pope Paul VI on September 25, 1965 to ensure a more unified and efficient collaboration between the pope and the bishops.
Since 1971 the Synods are held in a smaller room (with Pope John Paul II) in the same building as the Hall of Papal Audiences.
