Six floors above busy Via Cola di Rienzo, Hotel Joli is just that. It’s family-run, laid-back, a little tatty round the edges and popular. But what it’s not is luxurious. Some of the modest rooms have ceiling fans, others have shower curtains and a few even have both.
Technically, the jovial owners can claim to offer rooms with a view. Get a room facing the street, stick your head out of your window, crane your neck and look right and you’ll just be able to see St Peter’s dome. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to maintain the position for long so you might choose to forgo the view for one of the quieter inside rooms. In terms of room decor there’s not much to say – there’s laminated parquet on the floor, blue paper on the walls and unexceptional, functional furniture. A telephone and ceiling fan comprise the mod cons (air-con is available in some rooms but costs an extra 10).
